What Is Gun Bluing?

a. Cold Bluing
Step 1: Ensure Your Safety First

Step 2: Remove The Exposed Steel Caused by The Rust
Remove the exposed steel from the Gun with the rust remover that is caused by the rust. Instead of rust remover like naval jelly, you can also use white vinegar to remove rust.
The white vinegar contains solid acetic acid, a pretty strong material that works to remove rust.

b. Hot Bluing
Step 1: Polish The Gun with Sandpaper or Steel Wool
Like the cold Bluing, polish the Gun with sandpaper and steel wool.
Step 2: Dip The Gun into the Cleaning Solution
While Rebluing a gun, the dirt, grease, or oil over the Gun can come on the way of Rebluing. So, you need to clean the Gun with the cleaning solution to remove these materials.
Dip the gun parts into the cleaning solution for 15 to 20 minutes. This cleaning solution can be commercial or the white vinegar like you use for the cold Bluing.
Step 3: Rinse Off the Cleaning Solution
Now, take the Gun under the cold water and rinse it twice or thrice times. If the cleaning solution doesn't remove with the water, use the dishwasher to remove them.
Instead of cold water, use hot water when using the dishwasher or detergent to remove the cleaning solutions.
Step 4: Prepare The Hot Bluing Solution.
Take the hot bluing solution and break the salt cramps from it, if there are any. Now heat the solution in a bowl at 275-311 degrees Fahrenheit until it gets heated.
Separate the parts of the Gun and put them into the hot Bluing solution. Let the parts with the solution like that for 15 to 30 minutes until it holds your desired color. Ensure all the parts of Gun are coated with the solution properly.
Dip the steel component of your Gun into the nitrate and chromate mixture. But before dipping, make sure it is warmed up at the same temperature as the hot bluing solutions.
Step 5: Wash Off the Reblued Gun.
Bring out the parts of the Gun from the bluing solution and nitrate and chromate mixture. Take those parts into another bowl and rinse the parts one after one through the cold water.
Step 6: Boil The Parts of the Gun into The Water
Boil some water, put all the gun parts into the water for 5-10 minutes. This step is essential for removing the residue of the additional Bluing from the Gun.
Step 7: Use The Water-Dispelling Oil to Ensure the Rust Protection
Take the water-dispelling oil into a bowl and put the Gun's parts into it. Wait for 45-60 minutes, and let the parts cool up.
You can simply follow the same process for rebluing a pistol, reblueing a rifle, reblueing a barrel etc.
Besides cooling the Gun, this step is also essential to make the gun rust and corrosion-proof.
